On-Site Archaeology
Two evaluation trenches were excavated, both entirely by hand. Trench 1 measured approximately 1.80 metres square and was located against the wall running along the north eastern boundary of the site. This was initially excavated to a depth of 1.20m BGL, and a smaller keyhole trench measuring approximately 0.50m square was then excavated within it, situated against the medieval wall. This took the final depth of Trench 1 to more than 2.00m BGL.
The second evaluation trench (Trench 2) measured 1.00 metre square and was excavated to a depth of 1.00 metre. The trench locations are illustrated in Figure 2.
