The Hungate Archaeological Project: 13-14 Fossgate

On-Site Archaeology

Summary

An archaeological evaluation was carried out on behalf of The York Conservation Trust on the site of a proposed development to the rear of numbers 13 - 14 Fossgate, York. This evaluation commenced on Friday 13th March and was completed on Tuesday 17th March 1998. The aim of the evaluation was to examine, and if possible find dating evidence associated with, a wall running between the development site and Black Horse Passage. A series of deposits butting this wall were removed to a depth of approximately 2.00 metres below ground level. These deposits were of modern to late medieval date. The footings of the wall were not revealed.

This report was prepared by Marie-Claire Ferguson and Guy Hopkinson of On-Site Archaeology.
