Carmelite Street: Introduction

The Hungate Archaeological Project: Carmelite Street

York Archaeological Trust

Introduction

In April and May 1991, York Archaeological Trust undertook four weeks of evaluative excavation on land on the south-east side of Carmelite Street, York (NGR SE 60705178). The work was carried out on behalf of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, in advance of a proposed office development. It followed a specification issued by the City Council's Principal Archaeologist to establish the depth and nature of surviving archaeological deposits.

Three trenches were excavated, each measuring 3.0m square (Fig. 1). Trench 1 was located towards the north-east end of the site, in the middle of the standing building. Once the concrete floor had been removed by jack-hammer, excavation of this trench was undertaken entirely by hand to the agreed depth of 2.0m.

Trenches 2 and 3 were situated towards the south-west end of the site, with Trench 2 some 7m north-west of Trench 3. They were dug out by machine until, after the removal of approximately 1.8m and 2.1m respectively, archaeological deposits were encountered. Excavation was consequently continued entirely by hand to the agreed maximum depth of about 3.0m.

During the excavation, seven boreholes were driven by Sub Soil Surveys Ltd. These provided evidence of the deeper deposits on the site.
