The borehole survey was undertaken by Hymas Ltd and On-Site Archaeology. The boreholes were drilled at various locations within the proposed development area, and the samples recorded and sieved to recover any dating evidence. The heights at which the various historical periods were represented were used to create a model of the sub surface deposits. Borehole report.
The results of the borehole survey were used to create a predictive model of the potential underground archaeological deposits and the underlying 'natural', the deposits which have not been directly influenced by human action. This was achieved by comparing the deposits from each borehole which contained datable artefacts with those from surrounding boreholes which were of a similar nature. In this way the height above sea level for each historical period at each borehole location was estimated (though in some cases this was inivitably no more than an educated guess).
These heights were then entered into a database, and processed using G-Sys GDMS (Geographic Data Management Software), which put simply compares all the height information and creates a contour plot for the surface of each historical period. This can then be used to create three dimensional renderings of the site topography, and to calculate
